Last weekend on my drive to the downtown Raleigh Kava bar, I passed by a sign that made me chuckle with a very funny memory. The sign was for Adventure Landing, an indoor fun park for children. The memory was from my first job out of undergrad. I have written about that job before. Click here for the most recent post. It was a job that gave me the extra nudge I needed to go to graduate school and the place where I met my husband and some lifelong friends.
But back to that memory. Here is that Facebook post to help tell the story.

Some of the comments to my post brought back some other funny memories from that summer (why the community pool was always being shocked at the end of the day was a classic one). These comments prompted one friend and I to start texting and having some really good conversations. In those discussions, the idea of collaborating on a book came up. That idea led to the one of starting a podcast…. Our ideas lend themselves well to a good back and forth discussion. And the best part, other than collaborating with another colleague in the field of education, is that we will agree on some of the topics while others will spark a nice and healthy discussion of different ideas. We went in sort of different directions after our time at the Duke ADHD Program, but we are both passionate about meeting children where they are in order to help them be their best selves.
Without giving away too much, our focus will be on how the learner with differences can be successful in school. The first issue – changing that label. A learner with differences implies something negative. Different is not bad. But it does require people to think differently… and that is a good thing.
This will be my first big writing project since my last book. It feels good to have a writing outlet again, granted podcast writing is different than book writing. But for me, writing is writing. And being creative is SO important in my life. Digging out my microphone and headphones…. podcast world…. here we come!
